NASA Awards Omitron $23.5M Five-Year Contract for Orbital Conjunction Assessment

NASA’s $23.5 million contract with Omitron strengthens automated collision-risk screening for its spacecraft fleet and NOAA assets. The five-year effort responds to rising orbital congestion and formalizes coordination with U.S. Space Force tracking services. Evidence indicates maneuver demand will continue climbing without expanded analytic throughput.

The contract covers conjunction assessment screening for NASA’s uncrewed fleet, real-time support for crewed missions, and orbital safety analysis for NOAA’s Office of Space Commerce. Work will occur at Beltsville, Goddard, Johnson Space Center, Dahlgren, and Peterson Space Force Base. This expands existing Omitron services that already screen thousands of close-approach events annually against the 18th Space Defense Squadron catalog.

Rising launch cadence and megaconstellations have increased daily conjunction messages by roughly 40 percent since 2022. The contract therefore embeds probabilistic risk thresholds and maneuver planning that integrate both NASA and commercial ephemerides. It also formalizes data exchange with the Space Force’s commercial space operations center, a step toward unified civil-military space situational awareness.

The award underscores NASA’s recognition that collision avoidance is now a core operational requirement rather than an occasional engineering task. Without sustained analytical capacity, even modest growth in active satellites could push maneuver rates beyond current ground-system limits within three years.

Next steps include integration of higher-fidelity drag and maneuver models by 2027 and potential expansion to additional NOAA satellites under the same vehicle.

⚡ Prediction

Omitron: By end of FY2028 the contract will have generated at least 2,500 maneuver recommendations with collision probability above 1e-4.
