A Sign in Space Part 2 Coordinates Global Radio Telescopes and ESA Spacecraft for Simulated SETI Signal Validation

A global SETI simulation used an ESA spacecraft to inject and verify a fake extraterrestrial signal across multiple radio telescopes, stress-testing IAA post-detection protocols. The exercise identified data-exchange delays and the need for blinded review procedures. It sets the stage for integrated deep-space technosignature searches in 2027.

The project linked INAF radio facilities, the SETI Institute, and ESA’s deep-space network to transmit, receive, and authenticate a narrowband signal injected via spacecraft transponder. Observatories exchanged raw voltage data within hours, applied independent confirmation pipelines, and withheld public announcement until a pre-agreed verification threshold was met. The exercise exposed latency gaps in inter-facility metadata exchange and the absence of standardized spacecraft-assisted Doppler templates for technosignature vetting.

Existing IAA protocols emphasize stepwise authentication yet lack operational drills at the scale now tested. By embedding an actual spacecraft as both signal source and validation node, the simulation revealed that current radio arrays can achieve sub-Hz frequency resolution on interplanetary baselines but still require real-time orbit ephemeris sharing with ESA’s Estrack network. This closes a methodological loop absent from earlier optical or single-dish SETI campaigns.

The test also surfaced sociological frictions: participating astronomers reported hesitation to escalate alerts under existing Rio-scale criteria when the signal origin was known to be artificial. Future iterations will therefore embed blinded signal injection and mandatory external review panels to mimic genuine first-contact uncertainty.

Next steps include a 2027 campaign that adds optical SETI nodes and publishes the full verification dataset under open-science licenses, allowing independent replication of the confirmation pipeline.

⚡ Prediction

SETI Institute: By December 2027 at least three additional radio facilities will publish independent confirmation of a spacecraft-injected technosignature using the shared pipeline.
