Global Export Values Rise 19 Percent Year-over-Year as Asia Captures 71 Percent of Growth
UBS data documents resilient global export growth concentrated in Asian technology supply chains, countering earlier recession forecasts tied to 2025 tariff increases. The pattern reflects specific demand drivers rather than uniform recovery and carries exposure to shifts in capital expenditure cycles.
The recorded shift occurred after the United States raised tariffs on Chinese goods in the first half of 2025. UBS chief economist Arend Kapteyn attributes 8.8 percentage points of the value increase to higher volumes and 10.3 points to rising prices. Technology-related exports, concentrated in Asia and especially China, drove 95 percent of the sector contribution, reflecting sustained AI and power-grid capital expenditure rather than broad-based recovery.
United States tariff measures aim to reduce bilateral deficits and protect domestic manufacturing capacity. The direct cost appears in elevated input prices for downstream industries and partial rerouting of supply chains through third countries. Asian exporters gain revenue from volume and price increases in semiconductors and related equipment, yet remain exposed to any contraction in final demand or further escalation of duties that could compress margins.
Primary records show the United States Trade Representative maintained the position that tariffs correct structural imbalances, while Chinese customs data through mid-2025 registered continued shipment growth in high-value categories. No official WTO resolution altered the tariff regime; instead, bilateral negotiations produced limited exemptions for specific components.
The expansion hinges on continued AI-related investment. A measurable slowdown in data-center or grid spending would test whether the current growth rate persists or reverts toward the historical median.
USTR: US imports from China fall below 2024 levels by at least 12 percent on an annualized basis if average tariff rates remain above 25 percent through Q2 2026.
