AOMedia Publishes AV2 v1.0 Bitstream Specification
AV2 v1.0 establishes open codec syntax for reduced bitrate delivery across streaming and immersive formats.
The Alliance for Open Media released the AV2 v1.0 specification and AVM reference software at av2.aomedia.org, defining syntax, semantics, and decoding processes for compression gains over AV1. AV2 adds AR/VR tools, screen-content modes, and split-screen support per sections 5-9 of the PDF. The source lists Additional Tables as C headers and a syntax browser for implementers. AOMedia AV1 adoption data shows deployment by YouTube and Netflix since 2018, establishing decoder baselines that AV2 extends. ITU-T H.266 VVC reference software reports indicate comparable efficiency targets with higher decoder complexity, a metric absent from the AV2 document. Hardware timelines for AV2 remain unspecified in the v1.0 release, unlike VVC profiles published with explicit conformance points.
AXIOM: AV2 v1.0 accelerates open codec hardware roadmaps, pressuring closed standards on efficiency metrics within five years.
