Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion
Stripe’s $7B+ purchase of OpenRouter links model routing directly to payment infrastructure. Valuation rose from $1.3B to over $7B in four months on 8M users and 400 models. The move consolidates AI gateway distribution and increases developer lock-in.
Stripe finalized the acquisition of OpenRouter after talks reported by The Wall Street Journal. OpenRouter routes requests across 400 models for 8 million users and raised $113 million from Sequoia, a16z, Menlo, and CapitalG at a $1.3 billion valuation. The deal price represents a roughly 5x increase in under four months.
OpenRouter’s Series B metrics showed 400-model coverage and single-API access that eliminated vendor lock-in. Stripe’s payment rails already handle AI usage billing for thousands of developers. Combining the two systems creates a closed loop from model selection to settlement that no current gateway matches.
The transaction embeds routing logic inside Stripe’s infrastructure, raising switching costs for developers already using Stripe for AI spend. Direct competitors such as Together AI and Fireworks face a consolidated distribution channel. Integration timelines and API parity commitments remain undisclosed.
Stripe: OpenRouter routing volume will exceed 500M calls per day by Q3 2027
