YMTC Captures 14% NAND Bit Share in Q2 as US Export Controls Fail to Halt Capacity Growth
YMTC’s 14% NAND bit share marks measurable progress in China’s semiconductor self-reliance despite US equipment curbs. Domestic demand and state capital offset revenue shortfalls in high-margin segments. Continued fab expansion will hinge on whether export rules tighten further or remain calibrated to current utilization rates.
YMTC’s volume gain stems from 22% year-on-year shipment growth and ramp of its 232-layer 3D NAND in Wuhan fabs two and three. Counterpoint data show the firm now supplies domestic smartphone and consumer electronics makers, yet revenue remains fifth globally because its mix stays skewed toward lower-margin products. US export controls since 2022 have slowed access to extreme ultraviolet tools but have not blocked incremental capacity additions of roughly 35,000 wafers per month this year.
Beijing’s localization drive creates a protected domestic market for YMTC’s enterprise SSDs as AI inference workloads shift storage demand. Morgan Stanley estimates further wafer additions in 2027-2028 once new lines reach volume. This pattern mirrors earlier Chinese moves in solar and EVs: volume leadership precedes margin capture once state-backed buyers guarantee offtake.
The revenue gap persists because enterprise SSDs already account for 48% of global NAND bits and command premium pricing that YMTC has not yet secured. If the firm meets its stated shift toward eSSDs in H2, third-place volume standing could translate into sustained cash flow despite continued equipment restrictions.
Washington’s next licensing decisions on deposition and etch tools will test whether volume gains can be converted into process-node parity before 2027 capacity waves arrive.
US Bureau of Industry and Security: YMTC 232-layer eSSD qualification at a major Chinese hyperscaler will be announced before March 2026.
