NutriNet-Santé Cohort Links Each Hour of Weekend Eating Jetlag to 14% Higher Male CVD Risk
Large observational cohort shows consistent but modest association between eating jetlag and male cardiovascular events after extensive confounder adjustment. Findings extend prior night-shift and late-meal chronobiology literature yet cannot establish causation. Interventional trials fixing meal windows across the week are required to test reversibility and quantify absolute risk reduction.
Researchers from INRAE, Inserm and partner universities used self-reported first and last meal times to quantify eating jetlag in the large French cohort. Models adjusted for age, socioeconomic factors, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, overall diet quality and sleep duration. Both earlier and later weekend shifts raised risk relative to stable timing, suggesting circadian misalignment independent of total energy intake or sleep duration. The sex difference may reflect physiological dimorphism in clock gene expression or differing occupational constraints on daily schedules. Absolute baseline CVD incidence remains higher in men, amplifying the observed relative effect.
INRAE investigators: A 5-year randomized trial enforcing consistent 12-hour eating windows will report at least 8% lower incident CHD in men versus controls by 2031.
