Indian Tankers Maintain Hormuz Transits After Iranian Closure Claims
Commercial traffic through Hormuz continued at normal volumes after Iranian closure claims, contradicting headline narratives of imminent disruption. Physical data and prior patterns show the strait’s status directly anchors near-term oil supply expectations and limits price volatility.
AIS tracking data from the three vessels showed northbound and southbound movements through the strait’s traffic lanes without interruption. Iranian naval statements on 20 June claimed mines and patrol craft had sealed the waterway, yet no corresponding reduction in observed transits occurred. Washington reported no requests for US Navy escorts and confirmed commercial traffic continued under normal routing.
The discrepancy aligns with prior Iranian announcements in 2019 and 2023 that produced no sustained drop in measured volumes. EIA weekly data through mid-June already recorded average Hormuz loadings at 19.2 million barrels per day, matching pre-crisis baselines. Tehran’s position serves domestic signaling rather than operational enforcement, while Gulf producers maintain export schedules to preserve revenue.
Oil futures responded with modest backwardation rather than a risk premium spike, indicating markets priced the threat as rhetorical. Forward curves for August delivery settled 1.8 percent lower week-on-week, consistent with unchanged physical supply. Any future closure attempt would require sustained mine-laying or vessel interdiction visible to commercial operators.
Saudi Aramco and ADNOC loadings remain on schedule for July, locking in near-term supply. Price formation will hinge on verified daily transit counts rather than statements; a drop below 12 million barrels sustained for five days would trigger measurable contango shifts.
EIA: Average daily Hormuz transits will remain above 17 million barrels through 15 July 2026 absent confirmed mine deployment.
