CVE-2026-112816 Enables TLS Certificate Chain Bypass in LXD and MicroCloud Mutual TLS
CVE-2026-112816 (CVSS 10.0) in LXD before 6.10.1/5.21.9/5.0.11/4.0.15 and MicroCloud before 3.4.1/2.1.5 permits impersonation via malformed TLS chains. Discovered in Incus fork and confirmed by Canonical, the issue affects only network-exposed deployments. No exploitation observed; patches now in stable snap channels.
The flaw resides in the server's certificate validation logic for mutual TLS. It iterates over every certificate presented in the chain and accepts the connection if any matches the trust store, instead of enforcing that the leaf certificate alone proves possession of the corresponding private key. This allows an attacker to present their own valid leaf followed by a copied trusted certificate. Network exposure requires explicit configuration of core.https_address on standalone LXD or occurs during MicroCloud cluster join operations where member certificates are exchanged in the clear.
Canonical: At least two additional container runtimes will disclose identical chain-validation bypasses within 90 days.
