NYC Mayor Mamdani Establishes First-in-Nation Office to Boost Worker Organizing and Proactive Labor Enforcement

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist elected in 2025, signed an executive order on Labor Day 2026 creating the Mayor’s Office of Worker Power (MOWP), the first such municipal office in the U.S. The office aims to help private-sector workers “get informed, connected and organized” for union formation through outreach, education, hearings on workplace issues, policy development, and referrals to unions and worker centers.
