Altermagnetism Wins 2026 Europhysics Prize, Opening Spintronic Pathways Beyond Ferromagnet Limits

The 2026 Europhysics Prize marks formal acceptance of altermagnetism, a magnetic phase that decouples net magnetization from spin-polarized currents. Theoretical symmetry analysis followed by transport verification overturned a century-old classification and points to new spintronic architectures. Further crystal discovery and thin-film integration will determine whether the predicted speed and density gains materialize within the next decade.

The European Physical Society recognized eight years of theory at Mainz and Prague that combined magnetic symmetry groups with spin-orbit coupling calculations. Researchers predicted that certain antiferromagnetic crystals break time-reversal symmetry in momentum space while preserving zero net moment, allowing spin-split bands without stray fields. Transport and photoemission experiments on candidate compounds rapidly confirmed the signatures across multiple labs.

Altermagnets combine the fast dynamics of antiferromagnets with the spin-current utility of ferromagnets, a combination previously considered impossible under the two-class taxonomy that dominated textbooks since the 1930s. This resolves a long-standing mismatch between symmetry-allowed states and observed electronic behavior in materials such as RuO2 and MnTe. The finding also links to topological surface states and pairing symmetries relevant to unconventional superconductors.

Existing coverage understates device implications: altermagnetic electrodes could eliminate external field interference in dense MRAM arrays while supporting terahertz switching rates. The main limitation remains the small number of confirmed bulk crystals; epitaxial heterostructures and doping studies are needed to reach industrial-scale reproducibility and to quantify spin-current polarization under realistic operating temperatures.

⚡ Prediction

Sinova group: At least five additional altermagnetic compounds with room-temperature spin-splitting above 0.5 eV will be experimentally verified by 2028.
