Study Finds Repeating the Same Meals Linked to More Weight Loss
Observational study (n=112) in a weight-loss program found repeating meals and stable calories correlated with greater weight loss than varied eating, though causation not proven.
An observational study published in the journal Health Psychology tracked 112 adults with overweight or obesity enrolled in a structured 12-week behavioral weight loss program. Using self-reported mobile app food logs and daily wireless scale weigh-ins, researchers measured dietary repetition and caloric stability. Participants with higher meal repetition lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight, compared with 4.3% for those eating a wider variety of foods; for every 100-calorie increase in daily fluctuation, weight loss dropped by about 0.6%. No cause-and-effect relationship was established, the study relied on self-reported data, and no conflicts of interest were reported. Registered dietitians not involved in the research noted that while consistency may help, the meals need to be nutrient-dense and real-world schedules can make strict repetition challenging.
