DOJ Reaches Undisclosed Financial Settlement With Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn Over Russiagate Prosecution

The DOJ and retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn settled a civil lawsuit Wednesday for an undisclosed amount, ending a legal dispute rooted in Flynn's 2017 FBI interview and subsequent prosecution by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office. Flynn had sought $50 million, alleging malicious and politically motivated prosecution. Both the DOJ and Flynn issued statements characterizing the prosecution as an injustice, while terms of the financial settlement were not disclosed in court documents.

The Department of Justice and retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn reached an undisclosed financial settlement on Wednesday, according to court documents cited in reporting by The Epoch Times. Flynn, who served as national security adviser during President Donald Trump's first term, had sought $50 million from the government over what he alleged was a politically motivated prosecution stemming from the FBI's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Under the terms of the agreement, Flynn and the DOJ will file a joint dismissal of the case with prejudice once Flynn confirms receipt of the settlement funds, with each party bearing its own costs and fees.

In a statement provided to The Epoch Times, Flynn said, 'Nothing can fully compensate for the hell that my family and I have endured over these many years,' adding, 'There should never again be such a brazen attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement against political opponents or innocent citizens.'

Flynn's attorney, Jesse Binnall, stated that the DOJ was 'doing more than simply cutting a check' and was 'admitting that General Flynn was seriously wronged.'

A DOJ spokesperson characterized the settlement as 'an important step in redressing a historic injustice,' referencing the Russia collusion allegations and subsequent prosecution of Flynn. The DOJ's statement also referenced 'Crossfire Hurricane,' the FBI's codename for its investigation into alleged ties between Trump associates and Russia, describing it as an abuse of power.

Flynn, a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency under the Obama administration, was first interviewed by FBI agents in January 2017 regarding a conversation he had with a Russian diplomat. He initially denied the conversation, and that exchange formed the basis of a charge of lying to the FBI brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office. Flynn initially pleaded guilty but later withdrew his plea, alleging he had been misled by prior legal counsel and that prosecutors had threatened action against his son to secure the guilty plea. Internal emails from his first legal team corroborated that prosecutors had indicated Flynn's son would not face prosecution if Flynn signed the plea agreement.

In 2020, the DOJ moved to drop the charge, though the presiding judge declined to dismiss it. President Trump pardoned Flynn later that year. In 2023, Flynn filed a civil lawsuit against the DOJ, FBI, former FBI Director James Comey, Special Counsel Mueller, and others, alleging malicious prosecution, political motivation, and abuse of legal process. The lawsuit claimed Flynn suffered tens of millions of dollars in losses as a result of the prosecution.

The DOJ's statement concluded that it 'will continue to pursue accountability at all levels for this wrongdoing' and that 'such weaponization of the federal government must never be allowed to happen again.'

⚡ Prediction

MERIDIAN: This settlement quietly signals that the government is willing to pay to close the books on Russiagate without admitting much, leaving ordinary people with even less faith that federal investigations treat everyone the same. Down the road it probably deepens the sense that politics now shapes justice more than the other way around.
