A-level physics curricula omit key calculus and quantum topics required by top UK university first-year courses

Curriculum mapping of A-level Physics and Maths against Russell Group first-year modules shows consistent shortfalls in calculus applications and introductory quantum concepts. The preprint recommends targeted content adjustments by both exam boards and university designers to reduce remediation load. Evidence strength is limited by reliance on publicly available syllabi rather than observed teaching or assessment data.

The study examined historical entry data for A-level subjects and performed detailed curriculum mapping across OCR, AQA and Edexcel specifications. It then compared topic coverage and depth against module descriptors from five Russell Group physics departments. Gaps emerged most clearly in the treatment of differential equations for oscillations and in the absence of any wavefunction or uncertainty-principle content before students reach university. These omissions force first-year lecturers to allocate substantial time to remediation rather than new material. The mapping also revealed that Further Maths uptake, which supplies much of the missing calculus, remains below 15 percent among Physics A-level students at many centres. Policy implications include the need for tighter alignment between post-16 specifications and university expectations if widening-participation cohorts are to succeed without additional bridging costs.

⚡ Prediction

Mackay: Within 24 months at least two Russell Group departments will publish revised first-year syllabi that explicitly list assumed A-level calculus content with a diagnostic threshold of 70 percent student pass rate on a bridging test.
