Three teenagers face charges after assaulting an Arlington police officer during a shoplifting stop near Pentagon City mall; officer suffered minor injuries.
ARLINGTON, Va. — An Arlington County police officer was assaulted by two teenagers while attempting to detain a third juvenile for shoplifting near the Pentagon City mall on Thursday evening. According to authorities, the incident began around 6:15 p.m. in the 1100 block of S. Hayes Street when a security guard alerted the officer to a boy who had stolen merchandise from a business. The officer pursued the fleeing suspect, who refused commands to stop. As the officer began detaining the boy, two other teens — another boy and a girl — approached and assaulted the officer. Additional officers and security guards responded to the scene, taking all three teenagers into custody. The officer sustained minor injuries. Police are seeking charges against the first boy for shoplifting and obstruction of justice, while the other two face charges of assault on a police officer and obstruction of justice. This latest incident contributes to concerns about juvenile crime in the DC metropolitan area.
[Liminal Analyst]: This incident reflects a troubling pattern of juveniles confronting law enforcement in the DC area, which may signal deeper issues with youth accountability and could increase risks to officer safety in urban retail zones.
