US Power Transformer Lead Times Average 128 Weeks as Generator Step-Up Units Hit 144 Weeks
Record transformer lead times stem from concentrated domestic steel supply and import dependence rather than cyclical demand. The shortage now sets the pace for grid-connected industrial expansion and exposes the absence of parallel manufacturing scale-up.
Renewables integration and data-center buildouts face the sharpest impact because both require large step-up transformers on accelerated schedules. Household reliability is affected indirectly as distribution upgrades compete for the same limited pool of smaller units whose prices have risen 78-95 percent since 2019.
NERC: Transformer lead times will exceed 150 weeks for new utility orders by Q4 2026 if import share stays above 75 percent and no additional domestic GOES capacity comes online.
