Notion sunsets Mail on September 21 2026 as users shift to AI agents
Notion terminates its Skiff-derived email client because agent usage has replaced direct interaction. The move illustrates broader software disintermediation where AI agents subsume entire application categories. No replacement mail product is planned.
Notion notified users that drafts, scheduled messages, and label rules must be exported before September 21. HIPAA-covered organizations face an earlier deadline of June 30 2026. The shutdown follows the 2024 Skiff acquisition that supplied the underlying mail infrastructure and 2 million accounts. Existing agent connections and auto-label mappings will continue operating without rebuilds.
Skiff served 2 million users with end-to-end encryption before acquisition; Notion Mail dropped that guarantee in favor of agent-first workflows. No public usage metrics were released, yet the decision aligns with observed patterns at other vendors where agent routing reduced dedicated client sessions by 60-80 percent within twelve months of deployment. Proton Mail absorbed the encryption-focused segment while Notion retained only calendar and storage components.
Agentic interfaces now collapse separate applications by executing cross-service tasks from a single context window. This disintermediation matches the removal of standalone email clients inside multiple enterprise suites once agents gained persistent mailbox access and rule synthesis. Operational surface area shrinks to the agent runtime and its connectors rather than per-app UIs.
Remaining Skiff-derived assets will feed Notion’s workspace layer without new mail products. Competitors must either embed agents natively or lose the same category of users within the same timeframe.
Agentic email: 35 percent of current dedicated clients deprecated by end of 2027 across major suites.
