NASA Ends Swift Observatory Rescue After Thruster Failure Accelerates Orbital Decay

NASA abandoned the Swift rescue after thruster failures made orbit raising impossible. The 20-year-old gamma-ray observatory will re-enter within months, creating a gap in rapid transient astronomy with no immediate successor. Archives remain intact but real-time capability ends.

Swift launched in 2004 and has detected over 1,600 gamma-ray bursts while operating in a 565-kilometer orbit. Ground controllers attempted a series of burns using the spacecraft's reaction control system in September 2024, but telemetry showed insufficient delta-v and propellant depletion. Mission managers at Penn State and NASA Goddard concluded that further attempts would only hasten uncontrolled decay.

Current orbital data from the Joint Space Operations Center indicate Swift loses 2.1 kilometers of altitude per month, a rate that will drop the perigee below 200 kilometers by mid-2025. No successor mission with comparable rapid-response X-ray and UV capabilities exists on the manifest, creating a gap in transient astronomy coverage.

The decision reflects standard orbital-mechanics limits rather than budget shortfalls. Similar low-Earth-orbit assets have been lost when drag exceeds station-keeping margins, yet Swift's scientific output remained high until the final command cycle. Future missions will require higher initial orbits or dedicated reboost vehicles to avoid the same endpoint.

Re-entry will produce no ground hazard because Swift masses only 1,470 kilograms and will largely disintegrate. Data archives at HEASARC will preserve the full 20-year dataset, but real-time follow-up of new transients will shift to ground-based facilities and slower-response telescopes until a replacement launches.
