Self-reported autoimmune and metabolic disorders rise with proximity to Santa Susana Field Laboratory

USC survey links higher self-reported autoimmune and metabolic illness to closer residential proximity to the Santa Susana Field Laboratory despite high socioeconomic status. Fear, rather than coping resources, drove protective actions. Observational self-report design precludes causal inference and requires objective exposure and outcome validation.

University of Southern California researchers surveyed households within 15 miles of the former rocket and nuclear testing site, where a 1959 partial meltdown released radioactive material. The sample was unusually affluent, with 56% earning over $100,000, allowing isolation of proximity effects from typical socioeconomic confounders at Superfund sites. Self-reported chronic diagnoses since moving in reached 34%, comparable to national averages despite the higher income bracket.

Illness prevalence scaled linearly with distance, and fear-based risk perception, not self-efficacy, predicted protective behaviors such as water filtration and avoiding local produce. This deviates from standard Protection Motivation Theory predictions and suggests health anxiety may mediate both symptom reporting and mitigation actions. The design cannot distinguish contamination-driven disease from detection bias or stress-related amplification.

Prior state investigations had focused narrowly on cancers and found inconsistent signals; this study broadens the lens to autoimmune and endocrine outcomes but remains limited by single-timepoint self-reports without biomarker or exposure verification. Next steps require longitudinal cohort studies linking residential history to objective clinical records and soil-sampling data to test dose-response relationships.

USC team: Follow-up biomarker sampling of 200 residents within 5 miles by 2028 will detect no statistically significant elevation in autoimmune serologies compared with matched distant controls if contamination is not causative.
