Tottenham Hotspur cuts VMware licensing costs 85 percent with HPE Morpheus VME

Tottenham Hotspur migrated its six-aisle stadium data center from VMware to HPE ProLiant Gen12 servers, Alletra MP storage, Morpheus VME, and OpsRamp under a GreenLake managed service. CTO Rob Pickering confirmed the move covers server, storage, and networking layers with HPE operating the hybrid environment. The club cited Broadcom's post-acquisition licensing shifts as a trigger for reevaluation at the end of hardware cycles.

Broadcom's 2024 10-K shows subscription license revenue grew 35 percent year-over-year after the VMware acquisition while perpetual license revenue fell sharply. Multiple Premier League and European clubs have documented similar evaluations in public procurement notices. HPE's Q3 2025 earnings release lists Morpheus VME as a contributor to 12 percent growth in its hybrid cloud segment, driven by VMware displacement deals.

The operational result is a shift from fixed hypervisor licensing to consumption-based infrastructure where compute and storage are billed through GreenLake. This reduces capital lock-in and allows direct comparison of virtualization overhead against workload requirements. Clubs with large fixed venue footprints now treat hypervisor choice as a procurement variable rather than a default purchase.
