New Jersey Expands Voter Roll Cleanup with Daily MVC Audits Amid Ongoing Registration Errors
NJ Gov. Sherrill orders daily MVC audits and other reforms after discovering ~1,090 more improper voter registrations tied to software errors and re-entry programs; builds on prior cleanup of 6,600 noncitizen registrations, with no new noncitizen issues found.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on October 7, 2026, that her administration identified approximately 1,090 additional improper voter registrations processed through the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), prompting immediate reforms including daily automated audits of registration records. The review, building on a July disclosure of a software error that registered about 6,600 individuals who indicated they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024 (with fewer than 400 ultimately voting), uncovered two new issues unrelated to citizenship: roughly 750 cases where applicants answered 'no' to an age-eligibility question yet were registered anyway, and about 340 potentially invalid registrations from MVC re-entry events dating back to 2016 involving individuals serving sentences for indictable offenses. About 60 currently incarcerated individuals were also flagged for routine removal. None of the new issues involved noncitizens or underage voters, according to the governor's office. Sherrill, a Democrat, directed the MVC to implement daily checks comparing customer inputs on citizenship, age, and registration intent against processed records, add eligibility confirmations at re-entry events, and provide multilingual support. Records are being remediated, with many deleted or referred to county officials for review. The issues trace to systems under the prior Murphy administration and a vendor dispute with IDEMIA, which has contested responsibility. Republican lawmakers, including Senate Leader Anthony Bucco, have called for further investigation and proposed ending automatic registration, requiring voter ID, and independent audits, highlighting ongoing debates over election integrity. These actions underscore proactive efforts to maintain voter roll accuracy, with potential nationwide implications for states using similar automatic registration systems at DMVs.
Sherrill administration: Strengthened daily audits and vendor transitions will reduce future errors, reinforcing public confidence in NJ elections ahead of upcoming cycles.
