Preprint Reports Serendipitous Find of Virgo Almost-Dark Galaxy Matching And XXI Properties

A preprint describes the chance detection of an ultra-faint, extended galaxy in Virgo whose surface brightness and size match the faintest known Local Group dwarfs. The find supports the existence of a larger hidden population and highlights the need for deeper, wider surveys to test galaxy-formation models.

The team identified the object while testing the telescope on a Virgo field. Imaging in g' and r' bands yielded an effective radius of 0.9 kpc and total luminosity comparable to the faintest Andromeda satellites. No HI or UV counterpart appears in existing catalogs, confirming its extremely low star-formation activity. The detection adds direct evidence that extended, low-mass systems can persist in dense cluster environments where tidal forces and ram pressure are strong.

Galaxy-formation simulations predict a larger population of such objects than current surveys have found. The new galaxy’s parameters align with And XXI and And XXIII, suggesting these systems are not unique to the Local Group but represent a broader class shaped by early feedback and reionization. Its survival in Virgo implies that some low-mass halos retain enough baryons to form stars even under extreme conditions.

The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey and upcoming Rubin Observatory data releases will provide the wide, deep imaging needed to quantify how common these galaxies are. Systematic searches should reveal whether the faint end of the cluster luminosity function matches predictions or requires revisions to feedback prescriptions.

A key limitation is the single-object nature of the discovery and the absence of spectroscopic confirmation or dark-matter mass measurement. Deeper multi-object spectroscopy and resolved-star photometry would strengthen the case that TTT J1237327+143535 is a genuine analogue rather than a chance alignment or tidal remnant.

Rubin Observatory: First data release will contain at least five additional galaxies with central surface brightness fainter than 27.5 mag arcsec^{-2} and effective radii above 0.7 kpc within the Virgo footprint by 2027.
