macOS absent from Open Group UNIX certified register

macOS has been dropped from the official UNIX certified products list maintained by The Open Group. The removal ends Apple's formal conformance to the Single UNIX Specification after macOS 10.14. Enterprises and developers lose trademark-backed portability assurances while the underlying Darwin kernel remains unchanged.

The registry lists only AIX 7, HP-UX 11i, Solaris 11, and several Linux distributions holding current UNIX 03 or UNIX V7 certifications. Apple held UNIX 03 certification for Mac OS X 10.5 through macOS 10.14 Mojave but submitted no further conformance statements after 2019. The Single UNIX Specification test suite covers 1,200+ interfaces plus security and internationalization profiles.

Certification data shows Apple stopped paying for re-testing after Mojave. The Darwin kernel still passes many POSIX tests yet lacks formal verification of the full specification required for trademark use. No CVE or incident report triggered the change; the record simply aged out.

Operationally this removes the procurement assurance that macOS meets the exact interface set demanded by some government and enterprise contracts. Developers lose the guarantee of binary portability claims tied to the UNIX trademark. Apple continues shipping a Unix-like system under its own branding without the third-party attestation.

No public roadmap or developer note indicates plans to resume certification for macOS Sequoia or later releases.

⚡ Prediction
