Rimini Survey: 90% of VMware Users Cite Licensing Costs as Migration Driver

Rimini data and Gartner forecasts document VMware customers accelerating multi-platform strategies driven by licensing. Evidence points to deliberate risk reduction through hybrid environments rather than rapid exodus. Operational testing will determine durability of these shifts.

The Rimini survey of VMware users found licensing costs as the dominant factor pushing diversification, with 48 percent ruling out VMware Cloud Foundation entirely. Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure projects 55 percent of enterprises will run proofs of concept for alternative platforms by 2029, up from 25 percent in 2026. 47 percent of respondents now favor hybrid hypervisor-plus-container placements for workload flexibility.

Data indicate a shift from single-vendor dependence toward mixed on-premises, private cloud, and alternative hypervisor environments. Unisphere Research notes organizations seek continuity for mission-critical systems while pacing modernization to internal requirements rather than vendor roadmaps. Operational complexity remains a cited barrier, yet cost control and resilience drive the measured pace of change.

This pattern reflects enterprises applying structured evaluation under uncertainty, weighing vendor concentration risk against migration friction. Organizations are documenting total cost of ownership deltas and testing interoperability before committing production workloads. The result is incremental portfolio construction rather than wholesale replacement.

Next phase will show whether multi-hypervisor pilots convert to sustained deployments or revert under operational load. Threshold: if 30 percent or more of surveyed firms report completed migrations by end of 2027, diversification becomes structural.

⚡ Prediction

Gartner: 30 percent or more of enterprises with VMware footprints will report at least one production workload migrated to an alternative hypervisor by Q4 2027.
