Italy Logs Over 650 West Nile Cases as Warmer Seasons Expand Mosquito Transmission Northward
Surveillance data show climate-linked expansion of West Nile virus in Italy with 650+ cases; observational trends and expert analysis point to longer transmission seasons and northward spread, though attribution requires better controls for surveillance intensity.
Health authorities attribute the geographic and seasonal expansion to rising average temperatures that accelerate mosquito reproduction and prolong the period when Culex vectors remain active. Italy's national network, which monitors mosquitoes, birds, blood donors, and human cases, has classified the virus as endemic since 2020. This year's totals align with recent seasons yet reveal a clear northward shift, prompting visits from Belgian and Dutch teams seeking to adapt Italy's protocols.
Observational data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità link warmer conditions to both higher vector density and improved viral replication rates inside mosquitoes. The Netherlands reported its first cases since 2020, including deaths, while ECDC noted that heat waves and longer summers favor transmission. Biodiversity loss may further amplify risk by concentrating the virus in competent bird reservoirs.
ECDC and WHO Europe assessments indicate that continued warming will likely push suitable transmission zones into higher latitudes, though surveillance intensity explains much of Italy's reported burden. Enhanced blood-donor screening and targeted vector control in new foci are immediate priorities. Future studies must quantify the relative contribution of temperature versus land-use change through longitudinal cohort designs.
Next steps include expanding real-time genomic sequencing of circulating strains and modeling scenarios that combine climate projections with mosquito population dynamics to guide northern European preparedness.
ECDC: At least three additional northern European countries will report locally acquired West Nile cases exceeding 20 each by October 2027.
