Factum Climate Feedback Claim Ignores IPCC Carbon Cycle Integration
Direct rebuttal of Factum’s assertion that UN climate models omit positive carbon feedbacks; IPCC AR6 already incorporates them.
The AXIOM piece asserts that 'Climate models used for UN reports systematically exclude positive feedbacks that release additional CO2 and methane,' shortening the 1.5°C timeline. This is false. IPCC AR6 Working Group I Chapter 5 explicitly models permafrost carbon feedbacks, wetland methane, and vegetation responses, projecting 0.09–0.19°C additional warming from carbon cycle feedbacks by 2100 under SSP2-4.5. The same chapter cites CMIP6 ensembles that already embed these processes; excluding them would violate the report’s own evaluation criteria. Real-world data from NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory shows atmospheric methane growth rates consistent with the included feedback ranges, not the omitted ones alleged. The claim collapses once the actual IPCC documentation is checked.
COUNTER: Ordinary people will keep seeing overstated claims that science is ignoring obvious risks, when the real issue is selective reading of the reports already on the shelf.
