Infineon Opens €5B Dresden Smart Power Fab Three Months Early Under EU Chips Act
The Dresden fab marks the largest single Infineon investment and the first major EU Chips Act-backed power-semiconductor line to reach production. It reinforces Saxony’s existing cluster but does not materially shift Europe’s overall wafer share without parallel memory and logic capacity additions. Operational success hinges on rapid yield ramp and sustained AI-driven demand.
Construction began May 2023 on the 300 mm facility. It runs 24/7 across three shifts in ISO-class cleanrooms. Output targets intelligent power semiconductors that enable higher efficiency in electric drivetrains and server racks. One in three chips fabricated in Europe already originates from Saxony; the new line adds capacity without altering that regional concentration.
EU production share stands at roughly 10 percent of global wafers. The Chips Act target of 20 percent by 2030 requires sustained annual additions of advanced capacity. Infineon’s pivot from automotive microcontrollers toward AI-adjacent power devices aligns with data-center capex growth, yet unit economics depend on sustained utilization above 80 percent to amortize the front-end investment.
Scale economies cited by ZVEI remain decisive: the first wafer costs billions; marginal wafers cost single-digit euros once yields stabilize. Comparable Intel and TSMC European projects show 18-24 month ramp periods before volume production. Dresden’s university pipeline supplies process engineers, reducing hiring risk relative to greenfield sites elsewhere in the EU.
Next milestone is qualification of 40 nm and 28 nm power processes by Q2 2027. Achievement would lock in multi-year supply agreements with automotive and hyperscale customers and test whether the 20 percent target trajectory holds.
Infineon: Dresden fab qualifies first 28 nm power process and reaches 60,000 wafer starts per month by Q4 2027.
