U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican national for human smuggling and child endangerment after he transported a previously deported Irish man wanted on felony assault charges in Rhode Island, along with the man's British partner and their infant, across the Upper Niagara River from Canada. On March 15, agents assigned to the Buffalo Station responded to reports of an illegal entry on Grand Island, New York. They observed a small rubber raft and one individual, then located the adult male Irish national, an adult female from the United Kingdom, and their infant concealed behind a nearby tree. All four had crossed the river from Canada. Agents determined the Mexican national operated the raft. He has no prior criminal record but faces charges including human smuggling, unlawful entry into the United States, and child endangerment. The Irish man, who had been deported from the U.S. in June 2025, was charged with illegal re-entry and is wanted in Rhode Island on felony assault charges. He will be extradited to Rhode Island after federal immigration proceedings. The British woman and infant were processed and removed to Canada. This incident highlights the use of the northern border for smuggling migrants from outside the Western Hemisphere, including families with infants in hazardous conditions. [Border Security Analyst]: This case shows northern border vulnerabilities are being exploited by smuggling networks for European migrants with criminal histories, expanding beyond traditional southern routes and increasing risks to children in crossings.
