Oracle Trucking Compressed Natural Gas to Power Delayed AI Data Centers in New Mexico and Texas
Oracle is using trucked CNG as a bridge fuel at multiple AI campuses because pipeline construction has slipped. The move reveals the premium hyperscalers place on schedule certainty over delivered energy cost. Regulators and pipeline developers now face direct pressure to accelerate approvals or accept higher interim emissions from road transport.
Oracle issued a force majeure notice to Stack Infrastructure in September over power delays at Project Jupiter, then confirmed to Bloomberg that it has used road-haul CNG at a Salt Lake City facility for over a year and at its Shackelford County, Texas OpenAI campus. Energy Transfer rerouted the New Mexico pipeline after state regulators rejected the original route in July following an earlier March denial, shifting in-service from summer 2025 to 2026. The company also issued an RFP for 2GW of renewables, signaling multiple contingency layers.
Trucked gas costs roughly four times pipeline hub prices once labor, compression equipment, and diesel fuel are included, according to East Daley Analytics. At 100MW load, a 40-minute trailer supply interval requires 36 deliveries daily around the clock. Bloom Energy shares fell 8% on the disclosure given its 2.4GW fuel-cell contract tied to the same gas supply. The approach has previously been limited to remote mining and drilling operations.
State regulators and pipeline operators hold the timeline, while Oracle prioritizes compute capacity to meet OpenAI demand. The pattern shows hyperscalers accepting higher variable costs to compress construction schedules when fixed infrastructure lags. Regulators in New Mexico and Texas will face repeated choices between environmental reviews and expedited energy approvals as similar projects advance.
Additional CNG contracts are likely to appear in 2026 filings if pipelines continue to slip, with potential spillover into state-level siting reforms or federal permitting changes.
