Discord Options Alerts Generate 14.5 SD Retail Volume Surges That Reverse in Two Hours, Academic Study Documents

Paid Discord options alerts produce short-lived price distortions driven by subscriber herding rather than information. Issuers realize gains at follower expense; average subscriber returns are negative after costs. The structure rewards promotional claims over consistent performance.

Oklahoma State professor Brian Roseman and co-authors examined trade timestamps, volume, and price paths following paid alerts. Recommended contracts showed median three-day expirations and 30x leverage. Post-alert buying lifted prices, yet net subscriber returns turned negative after spreads and commissions. Pre-alert accumulation appeared in some names but could not be attributed to coordination.

The pattern aligns with documented incentive structures in which alert issuers capture entry prices before follower flows arrive. Similar dynamics appeared in 2021 Reddit-driven options episodes and in studies of payment-for-order-flow wholesalers who profit from retail herding. Regulators have so far classified the activity as commentary rather than advice.

Central-bank and exchange data show retail options notional has risen from 15 percent to 28 percent of total volume since 2020. Sustained losses among subscribers may reduce platform subscriptions, yet the marketing value of infrequent large winners preserves inflow of new capital. No enforcement action has followed the May 2025 eBay example.

SEC and FINRA examination priorities for 2026 list social-media trading platforms; any formal rule would require reclassification of paid signals as investment advice.

⚡ Prediction

MERIDIAN: FINRA will issue at least one Wells notice to a Discord operator by March 2026 if average post-alert volume exceeds 10 SD in more than 15 percent of tracked alerts.
