Xi Jinping's Egypt Visit Signals China's Push for Regional Autonomy Amid US-Iran Conflict
Xi's Egypt trip advances China's diplomatic and economic role in the Middle East by emphasizing non-interference and shipping security, coinciding with expanded Suez investments, against the backdrop of the protracted US-Iran war.
Chinese President Xi Jinping made a rare state visit to Egypt on September 1-2, 2026, his first in a decade, meeting President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations. During talks at Ittihadiya Palace, Xi urged Middle Eastern nations to oppose external interference and become 'masters of their own affairs,' while proposing a new regional security architecture based on common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security. He also expressed China's readiness to collaborate on protecting international shipping lanes, amid disruptions from the ongoing US-Iran conflict that has lasted over six months. The leaders called for diplomatic solutions to end the war. The visit yielded agreements to expand Belt and Road cooperation, including launching the third phase of the China-Egypt industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, which already hosts around 200 companies and $4 billion in investments. Additional pacts covered AI, digital economy, semiconductors, supply chains, and currency use in trade. Egypt reaffirmed its One China policy. This occurs as Egypt, receiving about $1.3 billion in annual US military aid, diversifies partnerships, while China seeks greater influence amid regional realignments triggered by the conflict's impact on energy markets and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb.
LIMINAL: China's deepening Egypt ties and critique of external interference could accelerate multipolar shifts in the Middle East, pressuring US alliances while heightening risks to global trade if the Iran conflict escalates shipping disruptions.
