RCT in Journal of Periodontology Shows Heat-Inactivated L. pentosus Gummies Reduce Gingival Bleeding at Six Weeks
A 2026 RCT demonstrated short-term reduction in gum bleeding from stable postbiotic gummies but provided limited quantitative endpoints and short follow-up. The work highlights practical adjunct potential yet underscores the need for larger, longer studies with mechanistic and clinical-outcome data before routine recommendation.
Longer trials are required to test whether early bleeding reduction prevents progression to periodontitis and whether effects persist after discontinuation. Parallel studies should measure salivary cytokines and plaque microbiome shifts to confirm the proposed anti-inflammatory pathway without live-organism risks. Regulatory clearance pathways for postbiotic foods remain less defined than for live probiotics in oral-care categories.
Iwata et al.: Bleeding-on-probing reduction will remain statistically significant versus placebo at 12 weeks in an open-label extension with at least 70% retention.
