Phase 1 Multivalent Rhinovirus Vaccine Trial Reports Strong Neutralizing Antibody Responses
Early data from a controlled phase 1 study indicate the vaccine is immunogenic and well tolerated, yet protection against actual illness remains untested. Larger efficacy trials will need to track laboratory-confirmed symptomatic infections across multiple seasons to determine real-world impact.
Researchers measured immunogenicity via microneutralization assays at baseline, day 28, and day 56 post-vaccination, alongside solicited local and systemic reactogenicity. Geometric mean titers rose 4- to 12-fold against matched strains, though heterologous responses remained modest. The design deliberately targeted the most common circulating rhinovirus A and B serotypes responsible for roughly 70% of colds in surveillance cohorts.
