GBD Modeling Projects 50-67% Rise in Alcohol Cirrhosis-Heart Failure Disability by 2050 in US, Central and Eastern Europe
GBD-based projections indicate substantial growth in disability from alcohol-driven cirrhosis and heart failure in three regions by 2050, driven by demographics and uneven alcohol control. Western Europe's projected decline points to the impact of sustained policy measures. Coordinated prevention and cross-specialty planning are needed to mitigate system strain.
Effective responses require integrated prevention targeting alcohol harm reduction alongside cardiac and liver monitoring. Next studies must validate projections against post-2023 consumption data and test policy scenarios to determine whether Western Europe's decline can be replicated elsewhere before 2040 thresholds are crossed.
WHO Europe: Eastern European countries implementing WHO best-buy alcohol policies by 2030 will see at least 15% lower YLD growth than projected by 2045.
