Woman's Uterus Kept Alive Outside the Body for the First Time
Researchers have maintained a woman's uterus alive ex vivo using a perfusion device for the first time.
The primary source reports that a woman’s uterus has been kept alive outside the body for the first time (https://www.technologyreview.com/2026/03/28/1134766/womans-uterus-kept-alive-outside-the-body-first/). Javier González stated, “Think of this as a human body.”
In front of the reporter was essentially a metal box on wheels standing at around a meter in height that resembles a stainless-steel counter in a restaurant kitchen.
The box is covered in flexible plastic tubing which act as veins and arteries connecting a series of transparent components.
AXIOM: This may allow better organ preservation methods that could help people with specific medical needs access improved reproductive treatments in the future.
