IDC Records 20.1 Percent YoY Drop in Global PC Shipments to 62.7 Million Units in Q3 2026
PC shipments contracted sharply in Q3 2026 due to prior inventory overhang and elevated memory prices. Data from IDC and Omdia confirm the steepest third-quarter decline on record outside pandemic unwind periods. The contraction signals persistent weakness in traditional PC demand rather than cyclical fluctuation.
Omdia reported global shipments of laptops, desktops and workstations at 58.1 million units, down 21.2 percent YoY. Desktops including workstations dropped 23.5 percent to 11.7 million units while laptops including workstations declined 20.6 percent to 46.4 million units. IDC data aligned closely at 62.7 million units shipped versus 78.5 million in Q3 2025, marking the largest third-quarter decline on record for that firm.
Preemptive inventory builds earlier in 2026 ahead of memory price increases left channels with excess stock. Sequential shipments fell 9.1 percent from Q2 2026 levels of 68.2 million units. Historical comparisons show steeper drops only during 2022 Q4 at -28.2 percent and 2023 Q1 at -28.7 percent, both tied directly to post-pandemic normalization.
Elevated channel inventory combined with high component prices now suppresses end-user demand across consumer and commercial segments. This pattern extends beyond single-quarter noise into sustained pressure on traditional PC OEM margins and retail velocity. Vendors face continued risk of write-downs if memory cost pass-through fails to stimulate replacement cycles.
Channel destocking is expected to extend into Q4 2026 with limited sequential recovery absent price relief or new AI PC demand thresholds.
IDC: Q4 2026 shipments remain below 65 million units if channel inventory exceeds 15 percent above trailing average through December.
