Grant Sanderson proposes academic credit for motivated explanations in mathematics
Sanderson argues that proof-centric metrics undervalue the explanatory work that actually advances understanding. Elevating motivated explanations addresses both internal credit allocation and external misconceptions about automation. The proposal remains undefined in evaluation standards or implementation mechanisms.
Operational change requires departments to treat motivated explanations as primary research outputs with review criteria focused on narrative structure, problem framing, and correction of initial misconceptions. This adjustment would align external perception of mathematical contribution with internal practice already allocating significant effort to exposition beyond popularization.
AMS Council: By 2028, at least two journals adopt explicit review criteria for motivated explanations with acceptance rates above 15 percent.
