Bias-Adjusted Analysis Puts CTE Neuropathology at 74.5% Among 2,362 Deceased NFL Players
A new bias-corrected analysis published in JAMA Network Open estimates CTE neuropathology in 74.5% of deceased NFL players 2008-2023. The estimate derives from 387 brain donors adjusted against full cohort death records and symptom-linked donation probabilities. Evidence remains limited to deceased players and awaits validation through living-player biomarker cohorts.

Next steps require prospective biomarker studies and policy evaluation of rule changes implemented since 2018. Without in-vivo confirmation, the 74.5% figure cannot directly inform active-player risk or regulatory thresholds.
⚡ Prediction
Boston University CTE Center: At least one blood or CSF biomarker panel will achieve >70% sensitivity for CTE in a 500-player living cohort by 2030.
