The UK is advancing plans for a temporary ban on political donations made with cryptocurrencies, following an independent review and concerns from politicians about foreign interference. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the move in Parliament, stating the government will impose a moratorium on all such donations to protect democracy until proper regulations are in place to ensure funds can be traced. The changes will amend the Representation of the People Bill with retrospective effect from March 25, requiring parties to return any crypto donations received in the interim within 30 days once the law passes. The bill is currently at the committee stage in the House of Commons and still needs approval from both houses and royal assent. Reform UK became the first party to accept crypto donations last year.
