Juno Data Show Jupiter Bow Shock Uses Multi-Harmonic Plasma Waves Plus Upstream Shocklets
Juno observations establish that Jupiter employs a layered, multi-harmonic defense against the solar wind that exceeds Earth's mechanism in complexity. The findings carry direct implications for radiation environment modeling ahead of Europa Clipper and Dragonfly missions. Evidence rests on in-situ wave spectra from a limited number of shock crossings whose generality requires further statistical confirmation.
Juno crossed Jupiter's bow shock dozens of times, capturing electric and magnetic field spectra that show simultaneous harmonics absent at Earth. These waves transfer energy across a broader particle population, heating and decelerating the solar wind more efficiently before the main shock. The additional upstream shocklets further reduce flow speed, a feature tied to Jupiter's vastly larger magnetosphere and stronger internal field.
Kurth et al.: Within 18 months, at least two additional Juno perijove passes will confirm shocklet occurrence rates above 40 percent during high solar wind dynamic pressure intervals.
