Charles Bonnet Syndrome Linked to AMD in Up to 17 Percent of Severe Vision Loss Cases
CBS is a common, non-psychiatric consequence of severe vision loss whose low recognition drives avoidable distress. Evidence rests on observational cohorts and mechanistic imaging rather than randomized trials. Prospective screening studies are needed to quantify benefit of early education.
Next steps require prospective screening protocols in retina clinics. An ongoing NIH-funded observational study (NCT04871234) will track 500 AMD patients for two years to determine whether preemptive education reduces anxiety scores by at least 30 percent on validated scales. Without such data, prevalence estimates remain anchored to small clinic samples that may overestimate symptom severity.
