Topgolf cut virtualization costs 77 percent and hardware spend 87 percent migrating 650 VxRail hosts to VergeOS
Topgolf’s migration demonstrates concrete cost and operational gains from leaving VMware for VergeOS, including 77 percent lower software costs and integrated support for Toptracer AI. The move highlights tenancy advantages that legacy platforms lack at scale. Broader VMware customer exits are accelerating under similar renewal and hardware pressures.
Topgolf completed the migration in six months after Broadcom’s VMware acquisition triggered renewal pressure and hardware refresh cycles. The company consolidated six-node VxRail clusters holding 35 TB into three-node VergeOS clusters using 5 TB, achieving an 87 percent hardware reduction while securing a five-year enterprise license instead of VMware’s three-year term. Multi-tenancy by time zone replaced fragmented vCenter instances and enabled nested labs without additional hardware.
VergeIO reported 70 new customers per quarter, most exiting VMware due to scale limits on tenancy and rising costs. Topgolf’s case shows tenancy allowed independent tenant upgrades and direct execution of proprietary golf-ball tracing models inside the same cluster, eliminating separate AI infrastructure. These operational changes produced the documented $11.3 million savings while simplifying maintenance across global sites.
Post-acquisition VMware pricing and SDDC Manager constraints have driven similar moves at other multi-site operators. Topgolf’s pattern—bundling migration with hardware refresh and AI workload consolidation—matches VergeIO’s typical customer profile and indicates measurable efficiency gains from unified compute-storage-AI stacks over legacy hypervisors.
Continued VMware-to-alternative migrations are expected through 2026 as remaining three-year ELAs expire; organizations with distributed sites and embedded ML workloads will test tenancy features first.
VergeIO: will sign 280 ex-VMware customers in calendar 2026 once measured against its current 70-per-quarter run rate.
