From Cambridge Poster Boy to National Scandal: Jason Arday's Plagiarism Row and the Soft Bigotry of DEI Expectations

In 2023, the BBC profiled Jason Arday, newly appointed as the University of Cambridge’s youngest Black professor of sociology of education. Faculty head Hilary Cremin effusively declared on camera, “We are so lucky to have you. You are the best in the world in terms of the research that you do,” framing Arday’s rise—from claims of being non-speaking until age 11 and illiterate until 18, amid autism and other conditions—as an inspirational triumph of inclusion.

That narrative has unraveled amid mounting allegations. Multiple investigations, including by The Telegraph and The Guardian, revealed extensive plagiarism in Arday’s 2015 PhD thesis from Liverpool John Moores University, with over 100 passages closely mirroring an earlier Brunel University thesis by Paula Zwozdiak-Myers, often with minimal editing and retained errors. Similar issues surfaced in peer-reviewed papers, including unattributed participant quotes and data from prior studies, leading to corrections in journals like those from MDPI.

Cambridge launched an inquiry into his qualifications and honorary appointments after whistleblowers, including academics David Harris and Martyn Hammersley, presented evidence as early as May 2023. Emails show Cremin, upon reviewing concerns, offered Arday “full support,” citing his experiences of racism and health issues, while the university initially downplayed the matter. Arday resigned “with immediate effect” in August 2026 following the probe, admitting some errors but denying being a “liar” and attributing scrutiny to racially motivated attacks.

Further questions emerged about unverified claims in his biography, including endurance feats, charity fundraising totals, and visiting professorships at institutions like Glasgow and Ohio State that denied the appointments.
