UK Cohort of 977k Adults Links Very Hot Drinks to Threefold Rise in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Large UK prospective cohort shows temperature-dependent elevation in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma risk independent of beverage type. Evidence is observational with self-reported exposure; residual confounding by unmeasured habits cannot be excluded. Confirmation via intervention studies on drink temperature is required before policy recommendations.
Public-health impact could be material if consumers lower serving temperatures; the authors note that routine cooling of drinks might reduce population SCC burden without affecting adenocarcinoma prevention strategies that target reflux and obesity. Next-step research requires repeated dietary-temperature assessments and, ideally, randomized trials of temperature-reduction interventions to confirm causality and quantify absolute risk reduction.
