Texas Instruments Supplies 58% of Electronics in Russian Geran-4 Drone

US firms, chiefly Texas Instruments, provide the majority of electronics in Russia's jet-powered Geran-4 one-way attack drone. Ukrainian forensic analysis of recovered units quantifies the dependence at 76 percent despite sanctions. The data illustrate persistent gaps in export controls and Russia's continued access to Western commercial components through indirect routes.

The 1230th Athena Engineering Regiment cataloged markings on intact boards from recent strikes. Texas Instruments TMS320F28335 processors, VP230 transceivers, and voltage regulators form the core of flight control and data exchange systems. At a stated output of 3,000 drones monthly, this creates recurring demand above two million TI-family parts annually.

Parallel RFE/RL disassembly confirmed the same processor family plus Chinese-sourced navigation and communications modules. Components appear to enter Russia through pre-2022 inventories, Chinese intermediaries, and shell entities in third countries, consistent with documented patterns in other sanctioned Russian weapons programs since 2022.

This supply dependence limits Moscow's ability to scale production independently while exposing vulnerability to targeted export enforcement. Dual-use commercial channels continue to bridge the gap between stated sanctions policy and actual component flows.

Further tightening of end-user verification on high-volume parts such as TI processors would raise acquisition costs and slow output rates within 12-18 months.

⚡ Prediction

MERIDIAN: Russian monthly Geran-4 output will fall below 2,000 units by Q4 2025 if US export controls on TI processors tighten by 30 percent.
