OpenAI Engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan Charged with Unauthorized Audio Interception at San Francisco HQ
An OpenAI engineer was arrested for planting encrypted recorders in executive spaces after querying installation methods via chatbot. Evidence includes surveillance, digital logs, and recovered hardware matching spouse account prompts. The incident highlights insider collection risks at frontier AI labs holding classified-adjacent research.
Alfozan entered the restricted room on multiple occasions between September 24 and October 5 despite lacking authorization. Surveillance footage captured him examining the television mount on September 27 and October 5. An unattended bag recovered October 5 contained his identification and a second identical recorder. OpenAI's technical surveillance countermeasures team located the first device on September 30 after a sweep; its contents remained encrypted and inaccessible to investigators.
FBI: Encryption keys recovered and additional charges under 18 U.S.C. § 1831 filed by January 2027.
