AgenticRei Implements OWL Deontic Policies for Obligation Lifecycle Management in LLM Agents
AgenticRei extends runtime governance beyond permit/prohibit models by implementing full deontic constructs for agentic systems. It addresses accountability gaps that mainstream agent tooling leaves to ad-hoc prompting. The work connects directly to A2AS and prior Rei deployments while exposing the need for obligation state management in enterprise logs.
The paper identifies that XACML, Rego, and Cedar cover only permit and prohibit rules. AgenticRei adds obligation activation after events, conditional waivers, and ontological class reasoning required in regulated domains. It decouples policy evaluation from the agent loop, feeding decisions back as structured constraints rather than natural language prompts.
Evaluation examples demonstrate policies that trigger mandatory CISO notification after data export or temporarily suspend obligations during incident response. These constructs cannot be expressed in attribute-based engines without external workflow layers. The approach aligns with documented gaps in current agent frameworks where tool-use logs lack enforceable post-action duties.
Integration with A2AS enables the same engine to govern inter-agent messaging across boundaries. This extends prior Rei applications in semantic web access control to dynamic LLM behaviors. Production systems that adopt external deontic evaluation will require new audit interfaces for obligation state tracking.
Deployment timelines depend on OWL reasoner performance at scale and standardized policy vocabularies for security domains. Early adopters in healthcare and finance can test against existing compliance rule sets before broader engine integration.
AgenticRei: At least two enterprise agent platforms will ship deontic policy adapters supporting obligation tracking by December 2027.
