EPA Sets December 31 2026 Decommission Date for Web Archive
EPA retirement of its 20-year web archive by December 2026 removes irreplaceable regulatory documents. Previous public interventions only postponed the outcome. Data preservation gaps now depend on non-government efforts.
The agency posted the new retirement date after delaying prior shutdown attempts announced in January 2022 and adjusted in March 2023. FOIA records obtained by EDGI showed annual maintenance costs of approximately 2 million dollars. The archive had remained static but accessible since the last postponement.
Historical records preserved include Bush-era Clear Skies Initiative materials and Obama 2015 Clean Power Plan documents. It also retained climate pages removed during the first Trump administration. EDGI tracking from 2015 onward documented repeated federal environmental data removals across agencies.
The move aligns with documented patterns of selective digital record deletion. American Society for Environmental History statements from 2022 highlighted risks of permanent gaps in regulatory history. No federal mirroring or transfer plan has been released, leaving access dependent on incomplete third-party captures.
Researchers tracking Camp Lejeune contamination and power plant standards will lose primary source continuity after the cutoff unless external archives expand coverage before year-end 2026.
EDGI: Archive content remains inaccessible via EPA domain after Q1 2027 unless external mirrors reach 60 percent completeness by December 2026.
