The messages dated 25-26 January 2021 record Fauci first stating no data favored early or late vaccination in pregnancy, then adding a second point: cytokine storm and fever after dose two could associate with miscarriage. Walensky replied that the observation was "definitely a good point, especially after dose two." The exchange occurred while more than 15,000 pregnant women were already enrolled in the CDC V-safe system.

Fauci's public statements diverged. On 3 February 2021 he told a JAMA audience the FDA had found "no red flags" for pregnant women. By August 2021 he described vaccination in pregnancy as "not a close call."
