Meta-Analysis of 1.9 Million Finds ADHD Tied to 50% Rise in GI Symptoms
Meta-analysis shows consistent association between ADHD and elevated GI symptoms including constipation and IBS. Evidence remains observational; medication effects and lifestyle factors are un disentangled. Further longitudinal and interventional studies are required to clarify mechanisms and guide integrated care.
Clinicians should screen for GI symptoms in ADHD care, yet the observational design cannot establish whether treating gut issues alters ADHD trajectories. Next steps require longitudinal cohorts tracking medication-naïve patients and randomized trials of dietary or microbiome interventions to test causal pathways and clinical benefit.
Warwick team: Within 36 months at least two RCTs of microbiome or dietary interventions in ADHD with comorbid GI symptoms will report primary endpoint data on both gut and core ADHD measures.
